Who win the battle?

Both of them win the battle.

Because compare them is not a good idea.
We better consider them as two different medium to perform an art.

For long term development, I think what people should do is not to depreciate anyone of them, and to accept both of them, moreover, to mix them together like the "Starry Night" video.

Enjoy making traditional art and digital art, find out the possibility of both of them.

And you will find out that art can be so great and interesting.

Do you think digital art can be as valuable as the traditional art?

Instead of compare the technique used in making the art.

The idea behind the artworks are more important.

Abstract art is a good example.

For example, the artworks of Piet Mondrian.

http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/mondrian/comp-10.jpg
Composition No. 10. 1939-42. Piet Mondrian. Oil on canvas

This is an artwork that seems to be simple and can be made by a computer program easily.
How about the idea behind? Can it be produced easily?
What made this artwork so great is not the technique included.
It is the idea and the concept.

For digital art, I think we also need to have this kind of thought.
Not only appreciate its form, moreover, to appreciate its representation.

So, Digital can be as valuable as a traditional art.

Can digital art replace traditional art?

After reading those materials, my answer is no.

Although digital art is so convenience to see(not need to go to a museum)
Traditional Art still have it value to attract people to go to see it.
For traditional art like oil paintings, we can see the texture, the stroke and the layers of the painting, we can look at it directly and not through the screen. This is what most digital art cannot do.

Two categories of digital art

"Paul (2003: 9) distinguishes two categories of digital art, one that uses digital technologies as a tool for the creation of traditional art objects and the other 'that employs digital technologies as its very own medium, being produced stored and presented exclusively in the digital form and making use of its interactive or pacticipatory features'."

From a book called The New Media Hankbook wrote by Andrew Dewdney and Peter Ride, p25

Here I also find the linkage between traditional art and digital art.

Problem of going digital 2

A point that I discover:

Going digital can be danger.
Why?

Because they are not physical object.(If we don't print it out)
If our computer suddenly down, lose all the data, the artworks will also disappear.

This is one of my experience,
At a summer holiday, I draw 6 paintings in the computer by photoshop,
each of them spend me about one day.
One day, my computer suddenly got some problem ,
and I need to format my computer at last.
The 6 paintings then gone forever.

This was a really bad experience, and I thin it is one of the disadventage of digital art.

Problem of going digital

Reference:
Book Title: Converging Media -An introduction to mass communication-
Author:John Pavlik & Shawn Mclntosh

Before I read one of the chapter in this book, I have a thought that turning things into digital is such a good thing that it make everything become convenience. For film industry, I also have the same thought.

After I read p132-133 of the above book, I find out some disadventages of going digital.

Firstly, the cost of the supporting tools. Although this is not a big problem in today society.

Secondly, and a very important point, the problem of convenience. People can get the things from the internet so easily. After film become digital, the size of it become smaller and can be easily shared by the consumer. Like Hong Kong, the film producer always facing the same situtation---illegal download of the films. If everyone just download the film from the net and do not go to the cinema, it will become a big problem that the cinema will close down and no one will produce film anymore.

Digital Art may also face the same problem, because people can change your work by using the computer easily. Once you show your artwork on the internet, everyone can see, everyone can change it. We need to be very careful if we do not want our work be destroy or copy by someone.

In the past , traditional art had also faced a similar situtation that there were some forgery appear, but the forgery were not easily produced, the people whoe make the forgery also need to be highly skilled. Digital art are different, they can be reproduced by just pressing one or two button on the keyboard. This can be a reason that why people think digital art have lower value than traditional art.

Digital Art: The Artworks

Artists:David Em
Title: Free
Year:2006

Artists:Frieder Nake
Title: Polygon Drawings
This two art are arts that turned into digital forms.
But if no one tell me that they are digital art,
I will consider them as traditional art,
maybe some abstract art like Kandinsky artworks.
Here I've got a question,
when I recognized the two artworks as digital art, have I devaluate the the value of them?
When I know that they are not painted by physical materials, suddenly, I've got a thought that "It is not so difficult to create this work, this is something that can be produced by the computer program easily."
Of course this is wrong because the artworks include the creativity and hard work of the artist.
Unfortunately, many people still have this wrong concept.

Digital Art as an entertainment

Art, this term make us think of something that we "look" at,
actually, we can also play with it.
A good example is Videogame art, a kind of digital art.

This is a image from a video game called Final Fantasy 7 Crisis Core.

Here is some information about videogame art:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Videogame_art

Videogame art is an art that interactive with the audience or the players.
The players can change the screen status by moving the characters in the game.
This is what traditional art cannot do.
Usually we just stand before the artworks and appreciate it.

The thing that I have find out:
I find out one of the adventage of digital art, that is as an interactive entertainment.
We can play the art , we can decide what the finished product like.
For example, some of the game may let you change the clothes or look of the character,
different people will have different experience during playing it.

Traditional Art + Digital Art

http://hk.youtube.com/watch?v=NLs9c0mvO5I

I have find two video from Youtube that they turn Van Gogh painting 'Starry Night' into 3D.
A traditional art had turned into a digital art in a different form.
From a 2D painting into 3D video!
This give us a really different view of that artwork.

The thing that I have find out:
Traditional can be turned to a digital art,
Both of them can co-operate with each other.
But in this case, I think the original 'Starry Night' contain a higher value.
Because the composition, color and the stroke are created by Van Gogh.

My Case: Making a traditional art

This is a painting that using acrylic .
I spend about 5 to 6 days to complete it.
I need to wait for the drying of each layer.
I need to have the paint brushes ,acrylic and canvas to make it.
I need to spend time on mixing the color and clean the tools.
I need to draw it very carefully because I cannot undo the process.
Finally, I have the finished painting in my hand.

My Case: Making a digital art

This is a painting that using Photoshop.
I spend about 1 day to complete it.
I divided the color into different layer, so I do not need to wait for its dry.
I only use the tablet and the computer to draw it.
During the process, I have undo many times.
I can adjust the painting easily. (e.g. the color tone, light and effects)
I can make many different vesion and reproduce it easily.
I can add some words on it, what I need to do is just type it by the keyboard.
Finally, I have the finished painting in my computer.

Their Opinion 2

"Digital art may rival, but will never replace traditional art"
by the author of http://www.hotcards.com/blog/1/3.html

The value of traditional art:

1. cannot be reproduced
2. need time for mixing paint and drying
3. cannot undo in the process

The advantages of digital art:

1. can be viewed easily on screen
2. can be easily reproduce

The disadvantages of digital art:
1. can be "steal" easily

The thing that I have find out:
I find out the possibility of co-operation between digital art and traditional art.
Artists can use digital art for testing the effect and the composition, and then do it on a canvas. Also , we can make a sculpture that had digitaly made in the computer, like the 3D design.
Instead of compare them, why don't we use them together?

Their Opinion 1

What they think? :
Refer to: http://www.illustrationfriday.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=643

A.People who think Traditional Art > Digital Art:

From their point of views:

Digital Art:
1.can be done quickly
2.need little skill
3.not sure whether it is an art
4.can undo and correct easily
5.lower value
6.can be recycle and reuse
7.need lesser tools(save money)

Traditional Art:
1.have physical texture
2.need more skills

B.People who think Traditional Art & Digital Art should be consider as two different medium:

1.both of them need skills and time to practice
2.both of them need our creativity
3.both of them are time consuming

The thing that I have find out:

We can consider traditional art and digital art as two different medium.
Instead of compare the skill or techique they need,
I think the most important thing is the idea behind.

Introduction

Traditional Art are so great and are something that are high class. This is what I always think of. Traditional art like painting and sculpture need technique and skills. This make traditional art become so valuable.

So, I ask myself, then, what are the values of digital art?

I also make digital arts like using Photoshop for drawings or edit photos. For me, using computer to make arts is so great that I do not have to buy those materials like paint brushes, paints and canvas, this save a huge sum of money because those tools are so expensive. What I need to do is control the mouse and tablet, draw on the digital canvas. I do not have to wait for drying, clean the brushes, mix the paint……etc. Everything seems so easy, so people may think digital arts don’t have great values. Sometimes, when I show some of my digital artworks, people think that I’m just copying them from the internet or may think those works are just something that can be easily made by the computer.

So, I want to find out what people think of those two medium. Can digital arts receive the same respect as the traditional art? Will digital art replace traditional art? I hope after I collect the opinion of others and find some data, I can find out some of the answer.
